My trip to Haiti

We'll I've been home 4 days now and still have not processed all I saw. It was truly more to take in than one can imagine for many different reasons. Before I left on this trip my understanding of what we had planned to do was much different than what  God had planned for us. I spend the entire trip thinking we were missing something when that "something" was right in front of my eyes.

To make a long story short God showed me that sometimes in life what appears to be best is not always what he needs us to do.

Due to many different circumstances outside my control we spent much of our time not in Port au Prince but inside the walls of the orphanage where we were staying along with 85 beautiful orphaned kids.

I was so excited we would have time to play with the kids but the entire time I kept thinking we needed to be out with all the earthquake victims. God showed me soon he had other plans for our team.

The kids at this orphanage were so scared they would no longer sleep in their beds at night. Most of them were sleeping under a shelter on the hard floor or a small sponge mat because they thought another quake would come and the building would collapse on them. How sad it was to know those wonderful children had no assurance they would be ok.

Soon each of us played the role of a parent. Encouraging these beautiful bright young kids that everything was going to be ok. Unfortunately  they were not buying it. The fear was very strong and there were no adults there hardly but us to assure them.   Our ministry was right in our arms and I am sad to say I didn't see it until I got home.

We were also able to bless a community with a lot of the medical supplies we took. Like most poor countries with no health care there were a lot of sick babies and sick senior citizens.

We were also able to visit Port au Prince and see all the destruction. It was truly worse then you have seen on TV. It looked like a bomb had dropped on every building. People were wondering the streets everywhere. It would remind you of a very crowded festival. People were wondering around just trying to find what they could. We saw people taking out rhubarb from destroyed buildings so they could sell it and even some people were still pulling out deceased bodies. it was truly a painful thing to see.

One of the pastors we were suppose to work with will use all the medical supplies in one of the tent villages and in the poorest part of Haiti. I am happy to know many will receive the much needed medical support.

I have loaded pictures for you to see. I could tell you story after story but it would take forever so I'll let the pictures tell you more about what I saw.

In the gallery you will see the collection of medical supplies I collected. Thanks to all of you who were able to give toward this. I promise you they were used for God's glory and they will continue to be used for it.

There are pictures of us having the medical clinic. I am sure hundreds were seen that day. The community was extremely thankful. I was able to encourage them to continue praying and trusting God to supply the much needed support they are praying for.

There are pictures of the kids from the orphanage. I was so amazed by them. One of the boys has learned 4 languages. Several others could speak at least 3. They were such a blessing to be around. I'm not sure who needed who more, them or us.

There are many pictures of the devastation in Port au Prince and pictures of the many tent villages. Tents were setup anywhere they could put them away from the buildings. People had put up signs asking for help in 4 languages, English, French, Creole and Spanish.

We were not able to help the people in POP directly but will help them through the local pastor. He will be able to feed them with food we purchased for him and with all the medical supplies. He holds a medical clinic with local doctors each week where he ministers to their body and soul.

On Sunday we went to church with th kids and saw over 45 people who had accepted the Lord after the earthquake. Many people who rejected God before are turning to Him now. God is turning a really bad situation into an opportunity to bring Haitians into the Kingdom of God. Later that night we blessed the children with all the wonderful stuffed animals given to me to take along with candy and toys. They were so happy to receive the toys and eat the peanut butter crackers we made for them.  It was a lot of fun to see their smiles.

We left last Monday with tears in our eyes and many many hugs from the kids who were so thankful for our time with them. God used us to bless them in many ways. We loved on them, told them how much they were loved and most importantly we told them how much God loves them.

I am looking forward to going again to do other work if God allows but for now I am content that even though we did not do what I wanted to or expected to I know we did what God wanted and that's the most important thing you can do on a mission trip. Be flexible and be obedient.

Thanks for all your support I know God will honor it and bless you more than I was ever blessed.

On my way to Haiti

I had hoped to send this last night but I ended up sick and needed to go to bed. I am here with our team at the airport getting excited to head south.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated supplies. I had so much that there will be some for the next trip that the church will take. Way to go friends. You really showed how much you can support me and how much helping God is important to you.

Please pray for our team as we have no idea what things we will come up against.

Pray for healing in my body. I have antibiotics and hope my ears are better before I board this plane.

I wished I had more time to write but I don't. I will not be sending any updates because there is not electricity where I will be staying.

Please pray for my family as this will be the first time I have ever left with no communication for a week.

Love you guys and thanks so much for you help.

I did not raise all the money needed for this trip so if anyone wanted to donate and didn't please go ahead and send it so I will have it when I get back.

Thank you so much.. Praise God He is in control.

Update on my trip to Haiti

Only 9 days left before I leave... I had my first team meeting today and found out a little more about what we will be doing and right now the specifics are yet to be defined but I know I will be doing many things outside of my normal mission trip. From moving blocks, to building things, to playing with children. What ever God wants done that is our plan.

Plans are being worked out now for our arrival. it sounds like we will be very very busy. We will be taking additional money with us to purchase food and more medical supplies to hand out in the local community we will be working in. We are so excited to be used by God in such a critical time.

Remember all those flip-flops I bought a long time ago. Well I still have some that I have yet to get to Nicaragua so of course I must take them now to Haiti. Who would have known...

We will be staying at an orphanage that holds 81 kids right now and so of course I have to take things to them. I think I have about half the stuffed animals for the girls and plenty of toy cars for the boys. If you have beanie baby style stuffed animals let me know. I'll be happy to take them with the ones I have. You can never have enough.

I am still in need of medical supplies. I'm the only one on my team that does not have a lot so come on folks hook me up and show these folks you got my back.. There's still time. :)

Today I had a conversation with a friend and shared with her how several years ago someone sent me $5 and a note saying how embarrassed she was that she could only give me $5. That following week I took over 100 tooth brushes to her house and dumped them in the floor. To her amazement she said wow, where did you get all those toothbrushes, I replied, I bought them on sale WITH THE $5 DOLLARS you gave me.

Her willingness to give as God led her to opened the door for me to use it to change the lives of 100 people. I find that so many say they want to help in times like these but don't because they think $5 is to little. I am here to tell you $1 is not too little. God can use any money you give for His glory. First you must be willing to be obedient and not feel embarrassed. Harris Teeter raised over $650,000 asking for $1 and $5 donations. As a group we can do great things.

Here is the list of medical supplies for you again in case you have not had a chance to purchase any and still want to:

  • Gauze – any size, but preferably 4X4
  • Dressings - sterile and unsterile
  • Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment
  • Ace bandages (or anything specifically for wound care)
  • Ibuprofen
  • Oral rehydration salts
  • Tylenol or Motrin
    Multivitamins (children and adult)
    Benadryl

  • Cough medications
  • Anti-diarrhea tablets
  • Alcohol pads
  • Band-Aids
  • Tape - all types
  • Thermometers
  • Tongue depressors

I will also add to this that medical gloves, and any children/infant medications, q-tips and cotton balls are also helpful items.

If you feel led to help me financially I would be grateful I still need a great deal before I leave.

If you have medical supplies to give me just call me or email me and I'll find a way to get them from you before next Tuesday.

Thanks to all who have given to me already. God will bless each of you abundantly more than my thank you's.

Headed to Haiti - Feb. 16th

I am sure you guys think I fell of the earth since I have not been writing much lately. To be honest I have been very busy and have not had a chance to put my thoughts together. I have been working on the photos and videos from the December Nicaragua trip and just trying to stay busy with our work schedule. God has opened a huge door for me to travel to Haiti for a week with a local church in Fort Mill. I will be leaving Feb. 16th and returning Feb. 23rd.

We will be working and staying at an orphanage and out plans are to:

  • Delivering and handing out suppies (food, water, meds) to Pastor Vincent and his team, for the people they are currently housing;
  • Woking with the children in the Cx.-des-Bouquets orphanage;
  • Practical work at the Cx.-des-Bouquets orphanage;
  • Serving Paastor Joseph and his team in Cx.-des-Bouquets;
  • Ministry to encourage and equip pastors and believers;
  • Possible travel to Les Cayes and assist with the orphanage there;
  • Possible travel to St. Marks and assist and encourge Pastor Meuler there.

I can't wait to get my hands on some little Haitian boys and girls. I am so excited to be able to help. When God told me I was to go I was not sure how or with who and one morning as I was praying he clearly told me I would be going to Haiti, minutes after that moment I received an email from a friend who was going. I immediately knew this was my open door. After talking with her I contacted the church to find that they were only going to take 7 people and they were full. I told the Pastor, well you will be calling me back because I know God told me I was to go on this trip. Needless to say this morning I was told to call him and now I am going. God is good. When He has a plan for you, He has a plan.

They are asking for much needed medical supplies. If you have felt led to help this country now is your opportunity.  All of us have doctors we see and all of them have medical supplies. Would you ask on my behalf for some supplies? Even if I just get a tube of ointment, its one more than they have. Here is a list of the supplies we are ask to collect:

  • Gauze – any size, but preferably 4X4
  • Dressings - sterile and unsterile
  • Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment
  • Ace bandages (or anything specifically for wound care)
  • Ibuprofen
  • Oral rehydration salts
  • Tylenol

  • Motrin
  • Multivitamins (children and adult)
  • Benadryl
  • Cough medications
  • Anti-diarrhea tablets
  • Alcohol pads
  • Band-Aids
  • Tape - all types
  • Thermometers
  • Tongue depressors

Please help me collect these items. All it takes is for you to show the list to your doctors office and ask if they would be willing to donate something. Trust me, it is more than they have and God will bless you for your willingness to ask.

I will need all the supplies by February 12th. If you receive some supplies, email me so I can plan on them coming.

I will be going with a team of 6 others. Pray for us. We are going into an area outside of Port o Prince and will be in a secure location but things are desperate their and where there is desperation their is an opportunity for us to teach them where their hope comes from, My Lord, My Savior.

In order to take this trip I need to also raise $1,000 dollars. If you feel led to help me take this trip I would be grateful for your financial support. Please send your gift as soon as possible. If you feel led that your financial gift needs to go directly to the people of Haiti, that's perfectly ok with me and I will make sure that any money designated for Haiti will be used in Haiti. I need all money by February 12th also.

I am honored God has allowed me to help this hurting country. One day I was listening to CNN and a woman called in saying that she could not even afford $5 to give to Haiti because she was on disability and had none. Her attitude was that when the government of the US helps her she'll help others. It made me angry. I guarantee you that she will waist $5 this month on junk. We say we have no money but our cabinets are full, our refrigerators are full. We can sacrifice if we cant to. You can give up buying Coca Cola and drin Kool-Aid for two weeks if you want. You can give up stopping at McDonald's today  if you want. We live with a mentality that we can't and God says, DO IT and trust me...

Please help any way you can. I hope by now you can trust me that I do what I say with your gifts. I stand accountable before God and you.

If you have any questions, let me know.

God Bless,

Angie Honeycutt

Merry CHRISTmas to Everyone

Today was our Christmas day for my family because we will be heading to Grandma's tomorrow. Please pray for us as we travel into an area that has about 12-15 inches of snow even after 3 days of melting. I have been so busy since I got home trying to get ready for Christmas and packing to go home that I have not had time to write details about my trip. As soon as I came home and my feet hit the floor I have been going and going and going.

I am happy to say that we sent 49 kids to school instead of 36. It was amazing and as soon as I can get my pictures ready I will post them. Most of these kids had never even wrote in a car before. It was so special. The kids faces were filled with excitement and the mothers eyes filled with tears. It was one of the most rewarding moments for me. The comments from the parents made me cry often but the hugs from the kids took that sorrow away and turn it into joy. It was truly an amazing site to see.

The families in Cebieta are eating their new peppers and tomatoes and other vegetables was we speak some will be coming in this week and next. They were so happy to see the fruits of their labor. We had a celebration with them and they gave me a "key" to the city and made me an official "Nicaraguan" . It was very special to see them excited but the cheers did not come from the excitement of seeing their gardens it came from the distribution of the bibles. I was able to give them 35 bibles with a notebook and 2 pens and a gallon size baggie to protect them if it rained. During the celebration the Pastor was preaching and the families were finding the scriptures like pros. It was a site to see also.  Each week the local church brings them 15 minutes into town in the back of a truck for services and every Monday they have bible study under the big tree. This is what my time and efforts is all about. They are only 35 people but they will soon be 350 or 3,000, just because people care enough to invest in their future.

We also showed the movie Facing the Giants to over 100 teenagers and many adults. It was a great night also because we were able to bring all the teens from Cebieta and another community to the movie. Most of them had never even seen a TV before much less a large movie with Coke and donuts. It was such a blessing to see their faces as the big screen came on. They will never forget that night.

There were 4 people that night accept the Lord as their savior. Many wanted to but we all could tell it was the temptations of upcoming parties and peer pressure that keep them back. It was obvious there were several people who were causing distractions in the crowd. I spoke that night and I can honestly say I have no idea what I said. The entire night before I prayed and prayed and God gave me nothing. When I took the mic to speak I prayed again and God said some amazing things from me. I was told later that things I said moved their hearts and helped them to see my heart in a very different way. I hope it opens the door for many other times for them to see the real Angie. The one that loves them.

I got to go to the orphanage and bless all the kids there. 5 of my girls from the House of Rose live there and it was such a blessing to see them as all have grown so much. I took presents for everyone to make sure they all knew they were special also. There are many teenagers that live there and have no family at all so getting gifts from someone was a real treat.

I also saw my girls Carmen and Isamar and Karen. All are doing well and growing like weeds. All are learning to function in their new homes as it as been an entire year already since they left the orphanage. It gets harder and harder for me to see my girls. I love them so much but I am not sure if I can continue seeing them. Their focus seems to be more on what I am giving them than who I am. It's sad but it's Nicaragua. We will see. My heart can only take so much.

Today was a huge blessing also. My church feed 100+ people from the community who received food assistance each week from our church. I had the privilege of serving them plates of turkey and dressing with all the fix'ns and give them a box of food as they left. It caused me to miss Nicaragua real bad.

I challenge each of you this season no matter what your situation is to truly take a look at the blessings God has given you. Unless you are homeless right now and on the streets you are a very BLESSED individual. This time of the year the world pushes in our heads that we have to have certain things in order to be happy and have a great Christmas. I ask you to focus on what you already have not what you don't have.

God gave his son to us as a FREE gift. That same son lived and walked on this earth just like us but I bet there is no where in the bible you can find a word about him wishing he had anything. It is real easy to get depressed and sad about what we don't have, I know, I have done it and felt that sadness many many times in my life and I also know it is real easy to say what I am saying if you are not in need. I remember being encouraged by someone once and I knew for sure she had everything her kids had asked for under her tree and the entire time I was thinking YOU HAVE NO IDEA LADY... But I do.. I know exactly what that feels like.

My challenge to you is to look around you and ask is there anybody in my life that needs Jesus this season, is there anyone who needs to be encouraged. Find them and make a difference this Christmas on behalf of Jesus. Teach your kids to give to others who have nothing. Invite a neighbor over for dinner or take them a pie. DO SOMETHING to show them Jesus this season, it will change your life and theirs.

Since this is the end of the year I want to make sure each of you know how thankful I am for the support you have given me this year. It has been a very amazing and difficult year all at the same time. Without your support, love and prayers this ministry would be nothing, instead together we illustrate the POWER OF ONE.

Merry Christmas to everyone and May your 2010 be the beginning of great things in your life.

God Bless all of you, Dios le bendiga,

Angie, Terry, Jordon, Logan and Jacob
